Earth Science New Zealand host UNDRR Chief

Reflecting on community-led disaster management in Aotearoa and the Pacific.

On 9 September, Earth Sciences New Zealand and Met Service staff briefed the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General, Kamal Kishore, and senior representatives from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) on approaches to reducing risk and strengthening resilience to disasters in Aotearoa and across the Pacific.

The discussion focused on challenges, learnings and best practices for multi-hazard early warning including tsunami, earthquakes, cyclones, flooding events, and other climate-driven impacts. The session was invaluable not only for sharing our expertise externally but also for strengthening internal connections—affirming how much more impactful we are as one organisation and highlighting the strong collaborations already underway.
