This Flagship supports protection of New Zealand’s freshwater health and biodiversity enabling sustainable resource use.
We develop effective and affordable approaches for freshwater management and, where necessary, restoration.
Healthy freshwaters are essential for sustained productivity and economic growth, and are central to the way of life and wellbeing of New Zealanders. However, freshwater quality, ecosystems, habitats and the biodiversity are in poor and declining health in some parts of the country. Our science provides information, tools and guidance for regional and central government, industry, communities and iwi/Māori enabling improved management of our freshwaters, and supporting delivery on the Government's freshwater goals.
This Flagship improves available methods to measure, monitor, map and protect freshwater biodiversity. This includes new models and predictions of how freshwater ecosystems will respond to cumulative environmental stressors. We work with communities and iwi/Māori to provide best-practice guidance for the restoration of freshwater ecosystems and associated economic, social, and cultural values. We also develop nature-based solutions to mitigate agricultural runoff, adapt to a changing climate, and treat rural community and marae wastewater.
