The culture of Ōtepoti
Ōtepoti-Dunedin has a varied landscape unlike anywhere else in New Zealand, while Ōtepoti has long been recognised for its Scottish influence, the wider area is rich with Māori history and has stories of Kāi Tahu whaunui the manawhenua that settled here long before Europeans visited these shores.
The province of Otago takes its name from the Ngāi Tahu village of Ōtākou at the mouth of the Otago Harbour. Around the region, there are a number of historic pā (village) sites at Pukekura (Taiaroa Head), Mapoutahi (Doctors Point) and Huriawa Peninsula (Karitane), they were settlements of importance for both food gathering and defence.
There is an array of endangered and native species in close proximity to the city.

NIWA has been at the current location since 2018 when the new office was built in Sala Street. It includes purpose-designed meeting rooms, workshop, lab and dry room areas. A drive-through warehouse is attached to the work space, where science gear and boats are stored. This means we can now engage with our Rotorua-based customers in premises that embrace technological innovation and design excellence.
