Behind the Forecast

Strengthening Pacific Weather Services through Technical Partnership

Earth Sciences New Zealand’s technical advice and support has been highlighted in regional coverage of new Automatic Weather Stations being installed across Kiribati, Samoa and Tonga through the EU-funded Climate Services and Related Applications (ClimSA) programme.

The stations collect real-time local weather and climate data—including rainfall, temperature, wind, humidity, pressure, solar radiation and soil conditions—to help national meteorological services provide more accurate forecasts, agricultural advisories and severe weather warnings for communities whose food security, livelihoods and safety are closely tied to the weather.

The work highlights the importance of turning observations into practical and actionable information—from supporting climate and weather monitoring systems to helping partners strengthen early warning information for farmers, fishers, families and decision-makers. By improving access to reliable, local data, the work supports Pacific-led action to protect food systems, strengthen preparedness and build resilience to climate extremes.
