Weather Ready Pacific: Stronger Together

Earth Sciences New Zealand support for Pacific early warning and resilience

Earth Sciences New Zealand is proud to support the Weather Ready Pacific Programme – helping Pacific Island countries build resilience to extreme weather and climate change.

A new partnership signed in May 2025 between SPREP, Earth Sciences NZ, and MetService aims to help improve early warning systems, build local expertise, and ensure Pacific communities are better prepared for what’s ahead.

The team at Earth Sciences NZ will support activities like: Collecting coastal data and improving inundation forecasts in Tokelau, refurbishing and upgrading weather stations across the Pacific, developing regional guidance on procurement and maintenance of meteorological equipment and training the next generation of hydromet technicians and creating a peer support network.

“We’ve been designing these activities in collaboration with our Pacific partners for many months and are excited to move into the next phase. It’s truly been a team effort, internally at Earth Sciences NZ and with SPREP, MFAT, MetService, and colleagues across Pacific agencies and Met Services. It’s a big milestone.”
