Earth Sciences Hosts Papua New Guinean Study Tour

Supporting Pacific multi-hazard early warning development

On 23 July, Earth Sciences New Zealand hosted a group of eight Papua New Guinean government officials at the Avalon campus for a briefing on New Zealand tools and approaches to multi-hazard monitoring.

In May, Papua New Guinea launched a formal review of its emergency management architecture with a goal of establishing a new ‘National Emergency Management Authority.’ Port Moresby is looking to its neighbours, especially New Zealand and Australia, to share lessons learned and best practices to inform this review. The visit was a part of the delegation’s two-week Disaster Risk Management Study Tour of New Zealand and Australia and included a tour of the National Geohazards Monitoring Centre 24/7 operations.

It also provided a great opportunity for Earth Sciences New Zealand to showcase our collective hazard management capability and collaborate on the presentation to our Pacific neighbours. Talks were given on GeoNet, Riskscape, the PARTneR2 project, and similar initiatives supporting development of hazard monitoring and management in New Zealand, Solomon Islands, and the Caribbean. The tour participants expressed their appreciation and interest to explore opportunities for future training and collaboration.
