Pacific Partnership in Action at Reception with Solomon Islands Prime Minister

Collaboration across Pacific Natural Hazards

On 30 July, Earth Sciences New Zealand staff briefed Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele on our ongoing work to support resilience in the region.

The event, co-hosted by the Solomon Islands High Commission and the Natural Hazards Business Cluster, was an opportunity to showcase the strong partnership between GNS and NIWA in delivering natural hazard monitoring, science, and response across the Pacific.

In the Solomon Islands, this collaboration has been instrumental in advancing multi-hazard early warning systems—from seismic and volcanic activity to ocean conditions, flooding, and climate-related health risks like seasonal malaria. The Solomon Islands government expressed deep appreciation for New Zealand’s continued support and called for sustained investment in resilience-building efforts.

The Honourable Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Jeremiah Manele alongside Earth Sciences New Zealand staff Neville Ching, Helen Barnes, Molly Powers-Tora, and Ery Hughes.
