One of the top questions NIWA receives about its Seasonal Climate Outlook is: what is below normal / near normal / above average in my region?
Due to differences in terrain and geography, notable differences in average rainfall and temperature can exist across a climate region, of which New Zealand has six. Therefore, it isn’t possible to say what’s normal and what’s not for a whole region, but we can look at what’s normal for a given location within a region.
