Extremely dry for much of the South Island.

June 2009 was dominated by higher-than-normal pressures over the country, resulting in more frosts and much colder than normal temperatures everywhere.

Autumn 2009: Cold and sunny for most places; dry in the north and wet in the south.

Wet in many areas; mild and sunny in the North Island and northern South Island; heat wave in early February.

Dry in the north and east, mild and sunny for much of the country.

Winter 2008: Very stormy and wet with floods and snow to low levels.

Autumn 2008: a season of extremes – heatwaves, drought, floods and frost.

Warm; extremely cloudy and wet in the far north, extremely dry in the Waikato and record sunshine in the south.

Sunshine: One of the sunniest springs on record in Horowhenua, Wellington, Marlborough, and Nelson

Spring 2007 was a mixed bag!

Winter 2007: Rainfall and temperature contrasts, with floods, windstorms and tornadoes.
Rainfall: Well above normal in parts of Northland, Hawke’s Bay, and Otago, well below normal in Nelson, and inland parts of Marlborough and Canterbury
Temperature: Above average throughout the northern half of the North Island, below average over the southern half of the South Island
Sunshine: Well above normal in Otago and inland South Canterbury
The winter of 2007 had contrasts in rainfall and temperature, with significant extremes.

Autumn 2007: Warm; record dry in east of the North Island
Rainfall: Well below normal in the east, and Manawatu and Wellington
Soil moisture: Significant deficits in several eastern regions
Temperature: Above average, especially in the east and inland areas of the South Island
Sunshine: Well above normal in Gisborne, Marlborough and parts of Canterbury
Low rainfall records tumbled in the east of the North Island, with the driest autumn on record. It was very dry and sunny in the east, from Gisborne to Otago, and Manawatu and Wellington.

Rainfall: Below normal in most regions, especially Waikato, Marlborough, and Otago; above normal in parts of Northland and Canterbury
Soil moisture: Severe deficits developed during February in the east from Gisborne to Otago, Auckland, Waikato, eastern Bay of Plenty, Wanganui, Manawatu, Wellington, and Nelson
Temperature: Cold, especially in the North Island and the east of the South Island
Sunshine: Above normal in Northland and Westland; below normal in South Taranaki and North Canterbury
Mean summer temperatures were well below average.

Spring 2006: Distinctive El Niño spring with blustery westerlies and south westerlies; very windy at times with stronger than usual east/west contrasts in climate.
Rainfall: Dry in Northland, coastal Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, and eastern Otago; wet in the southwest of the North Island, and the west and far south of the South Island
Temperature: Warm in the east of the North Island and Marlborough; temperatures near normal elsewhere
Sunshine: Sunny in the northeast of the North Island and southeast of the South Island, rather cloudy in the west of the North Island
