On trips that take us away to isolated places we need to take a Medical Doctor, just in case anyone requires emergency medical or surgical treatment. Our regular doctor on Tangaroa Ross Sea surveys is Dr Jenny Visser. When Jenny is not at sea hanging out with the scientists, she works in Wellington as a lecturer at the Otago Medical School and at the Wellington Travel Doctor practice.
Tangaroa has a fully equipped hospital, which thankfully is rarely used and is kept locked up during most voyages. Jenny took us on a tour of the hospital, and John McGregor (NIWA) was our willing volunteer to try out some of the equipment that would be very useful if someone was to suffer a cold injury onboard.
