Nelson set to unveil young science talent

Young Nelson scientists will have a chance to show off their quest for knowledge at the 17th annual Nelson Regional Science & Technology Fair next week.

The fair, sponsored by the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA), is open to all primary and secondary schools in the Nelson and Tasman region.

Around 50 entries are expected to be exhibited, covering all areas of science and technology.

NIWA’s Education Coordinator Dr Julie Hall says “NIWA is proud to again sponsor this event as part of our long-term commitment to enhancing science and technology for young New Zealanders.”

“Participation in Science & Technology Fairs is, on its own, a powerful learning tool and should also be fun. The enthusiasm of the participants in researching, constructing, and presenting their exhibits is plain to see.”

On 17 September, a team of judges (mostly teachers and principals) will interview all the students and select the best projects against the standard expected.

Prizes have been donated by a range of businesses, and science and technology organisations.

The overall winner will receive $600 and there are three runner-up awards of $400 each.

The winner may also be nominated for a place at the national Genesis Energy Realise the Dream festival – a week long event for young scientists and technologists, held in December.

“Naturally, NIWA hopes that many of the students exhibiting at this year’s fair will take up careers in science. Young scientists and technologists will be vital to maintaining New Zealand’s prosperity and our remarkable environment in the future,” says Dr Hall.

The fair is open to the public for viewing on Friday 19, Saturday 20, and Sunday 21 September from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. The prizegiving ceremony will also be open to the public
