Waikato’s next top scientists are showcasing their talents at this week’s NIWA Waikato Science and Technology Fair.
The fair, sponsored by NIWA, opens to the public tomorrow and features almost 300 projects from students in Years 7-13 from about 28 schools around the Waikato.
More than $9000 in total prizemoney is up for grabs with the winning exhibit receiving $800 and the runner-up $500. A shield is also presented for the best overall school. In addition, the top senior student is awarded a NIWA work experience scholarship they can undertake over the summer break. There are also awards made in 17 categories judged by 40 experts comprising industry and tertiary institution representatives. Some of the innovative projects entered this year include:
- Coil and Trouble – investigating ways of increasing the projectile strength of electromagnetic fields caused by an electric current.
- Starry Night – investigating how atmospheric conditions in the Waikato affect light intensity from stars.
- Pepper Power – how cooking peppers affect their Vitamin C levels.
- Coal Power – investigating the efficiency of different fuels in a tank engine.Is there Eggstra in Your Eggs – what’s in your egg carton, are they the right size and weight?
The NIWA Waikato Science and Technology Fair is open to the public tomorrow from 1pm to 6pm and on Saturday from 9am to 2pm at Hamilton Gardens Pavilion. Entry is free. NIWA wishes all students entering the fair the very best of luck.
