Launch of new MBIE research programme – “Catching Marine Carbon”

The kick-off meeting for the new $11M 5-year MBIE Endeavour Research Programme “Catching Marine Carbon: Testing Ocean Solutions for Climate Mitigation using Natural Analogues” (NIWA project END25304) was held at Greta Point on 22nd April. The hui brought together Earth Sciences NZ researchers, collaborators from the University of Otago and Canterbury, representatives of central government departments including MfE, the Climate Change Commission and EPA, NGOs and iwi partners from Ngāti Kahungunu, with these representatives participating in the first National Advisory Panel meeting of the programme. Prof. Philip Boyd from the University of Tasmania, provided valuable international perspectives on Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) at the hui and also in a campus talk the following day.
