Operational Innovation Award winner: Hilary Oliver, Meteorology and Remote Sensing, Wellington.
Hilary received the Operational Innovation Excellence Award for conceiving and building a software programme for NIWA’s High Performance Computing Facility that has been called the best in the world.
Hilary coded a programme called cylc (“Silk”) to manage interdependent time-related tasks. Silk, which now runs the forecasting system, is one of the most innovative and powerful pieces of computer code NIWA has developed in the past 20 years.
