This beautiful jewel squid Pyroteuthis margaritifera (Rüppell, 1844) is a cephalopod in the phylum Mollusca. Molluscs all have shells, but the remnant shell of a squid (its pen) is internal in most cases so you can’t see it here. This animal was found on Healey Seamount on the Kermadec Ridge at 1150 m deep.
