NIWA Datasonde service

Maintaining good water quality is important for healthy ecosystems and healthy humans. NIWA are experts in providing and servicing the water quality monitoring equipment you need to effectively monitor water quality in lakes, streams, coastal waters and estuaries

Our sensor suite

NIWA Hamilton’s Water Quality Laboratory specialises in servicing and deploying YSI EXO2 data sondes from global instrumentation firm Xylem Analytics. YSI EXO2 data sondes are fully self-contained, automated analysis instruments designed for regular monitoring campaigns.

A central wiper brush activated before each sensor reading minimises environmental interference and effectively protects against sensor biofouling even in challenging environments like wastewater ponds.

YSI EXO2 data sondes can be fitted with a range of probes including:

  • Combined temperature and conductivity probe (Output in: 0C, conductivity, specific conductance, resistivity and salinity units)
  • Dissolved oxygen probe (Output in % saturation and mg/L)
  • pH probe (Output in pH units and mV)
  • Combined pH and ORP probe (Additional output of ORP in mV)
  • Turbidity probe (Optical 90° scatter at 860nm – output in FNU)
  • Dissolved organic matter probe (fDOM proxy: fluorescence at 365nm excitation and 480nm emission – output in ug/L quinine sulphide equivalent or relative %)
  • Total algae probe (Chlorophyll a plus phycocyanin or phycoerythrin proxy: fluorescence at 470nm, 590nm or 525nm excitation and 685nm emission – output in ug/L equivalent or relative %).
  • Depth sensor (Choose between high resolution up to 10m depth or standard resolution up to 100m depth – output in m).

EXO2 data sonde benefits

Designed for three day to three month-long monitoring campaigns, the YSI EXO2 data sonde can sample at intervals from five minutes to hourly or daily.

For high resolution data acquisition (burst sampling), high frequency recording at a rate of up to 4Hz can be done at regular intervals.

The central wiper brush protects against biofouling and helps to maintain consistent instrument performance.

Users can expect a battery life of 2 to 3 months for a fully loaded EXO2 datasonde (dependent on sensor configuration, water temperature and logging interval).

Hire

We hire out fully programmed and field ready EXO2 data sondes, in standard configuration fitted with a combined temperature and conductivity probe, central wiper and depth sensor.

With each hire you can choose up to five additional calibrated probes for your water quality monitoring programme.

Calibration

Does your own EXO2 datasonde need some care and attention? We’ll calibrate and service it to make sure it’s performing at its best.
