Internships

Student internships

At NIWA we believe in nurturing New Zealand's future scientific talent. We are excited to be offering a number of student internships each year, usually advertised during August / September. The interns will participate in a defined research project under the guidance of a NIWA senior scientist and gain valuable work experience. In addition the interns will have a personalised induction, a career planning session and exposure to other science / support areas of NIWA.

The internships are usually full-time, fixed term employment for approximately 15 weeks over the university summer break. To be eligible you must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand at the time of your application, and preference will be given to those with an exemplary academic record.

If you are interested in a summer internship with NIWA, please register your interest through our career page and we will send job alerts as a vacancy arises.

Visit our careers page for more details.

Blake Ambassador Programme

NIWA is proud to partner with The Sir Peter Blake Trust to provide opportunities for young New Zealanders (18 – 25 years)  through the Blake Ambassador Programme. The NIWA Blake Ambassadors work alongside  our scientists to advance our understanding and address some of the big environmental questions and challenges facing society.
