What is Coast Care?
Coast Care provides an opportunity for local communities to get involved in the management and protection of their local coastal area and address environmental issues with their beaches. It can involves a partnership between the local community and others including iwi, district councils, regional councils, Department of Conservation and other organizations, all working together to protect and restore a region's beaches.
A major thrust of CoastCare groups is to help restore sand dunes by replanting native sand binding plants. Restoring and enhancing the sand dunes ensures that the natural character of the coast is retained, biodiversity is enhanced and helps build a buffer of sand to mitigate the effects of coastal erosion and coastal flooding from the sea. Other projects undertaken by Coast Care groups can include dune rehabilitation, fencing, signage, installing beach access ways and sand ladders, weed management, pest control (such as possums and rabbits), planting, beach profiling, beach clean ups and public awareness of coastal issues through community education and liaison with beach users groups, local schools, councils and environmental organisations.
