Biography
In addition to my present role as principal technician in a Marine Technology group (NIWA, Wellington), I am also an active researcher in topics relating to seaweed ecophysiology and developing seaweeds as indicators of marine pollution. Over the last 20 years I have set up systems for growing various seaweeds (including Ulva, Gracilaria, Undaria, Caulerpa and various calcareous red algae) in continuous culture, both for my research but also for evaluating seaweeds in aquaculture. At work I specialise in developing and building experimentation systems relating to aquaculture, marine ecology and also for the exploration of impacts such as ocean acidification and marine sedimentation on marine organisms.
