In November 2023, several sites along the margins of Lake Tahaaroa and Rotorua were surveyed for kaiaua. Resulting in a disappointing outcome and discovery of empty shells. The April waananga with the lakes trustees was a different story, kaiaua was found in abundance which was the highlight of the waananga.
