Antarctic toothfish catch rates

NIWA

Art DeVries has collected toothfish for his work intermittently since 1972 (Ainley et al 2013). People have expressed concerns about the drop in catch rate to near-zero in the mid-2000s. The catch rates observed during the last two years of this survey have been back at or well above historic catch rates. Some of this is due to the survey focussing on areas deeper than 500m. The DeVries dataset operated over a range of depths, often shallower, and airfield operations limited where they could fish. In 2015, 182 fish were captured and 114 tagged and released.
