Clive is an aquatic ecologist with more than 35 years of experience, specialising in freshwater and estuarine water quality and aquatic ecosystem processes. His expertise results from research in a number of countries from the tropics to the polar regions. He has recently focused attention on the role of science in addressing water management issues and water policy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, an Adjunct Professor at the University of Canterbury and holder of the New Zealand Antarctic Medal.
