Our acoustics team constantly watches the 'fish finders' on board Tangaroa. They conduct 'mark ID trawls' during the day to catch particular 'clouds' or groups of fish or invertebrates that appear at a particular depth under the ship. The same net gets used during the night when the fish team sweeps most of the water column to catch the layer of fish and invertebratess that migrate closer to the surface (they descend to deeper depths during the day, an avoidance tactic when sunlight penetrates to about 400m depth).
