Lamprey-habitat-unexpected

NIWA

Lamprey nests were located throughout this reach multiple years in a row. The reach is located across forest and farming land and doesn’t have large boulders that would be expected for lamprey to nest under. The lamprey in this reach tend to nest in the side of the bank and under slabs of bedrock. This is a prime example of the variety of habitat lamprey can use and how we can’t make a judgement call on if they are using specific habitat for spawning or not just based on the land use and habitat around the stream.
