These maps how New Zealand's summer rainfall differed from average during three strong El Niño events. Specifically they show rainfall anomalies during the summers of 1972/73, 1982/83, 1997/98. One map also shows the average rainfall anomaly across these three summers.
These maps show that during the summers occuring during these strong El Niño events rainfall was below average for significant areas of New Zealand. Overall the maps show that this was most pronounced in eastern regions, and the northern parts of the North Island and South Island.
