A satellite image of chlorophyll concentrations reveals a wide range of phytoplankton stocks, from low stocks in subtropical waters north of New Zealand to much higher stocks to the east and west of New Zealand. Waters to the southeast of New Zealand have plenty of plant nutrients, but phytoplankton cannot use these as they lack sufficient iron.
