Skates can survive the capture process, and live skates are released at the surface. Survival rates are not known. Tag-release experiments for skate have been underway for a number of years, but scientists have not yet developed abundance indices for skates. Results from these studies will help us estimate skate numbers, and determine whether bycatch is likely to negatively affect them.
