Biography
Originally from Santiago (Chile), I have moved around to Sweden and now to New Zealand. My background is in chemical engineering, with an early interest on air pollution ... particularly urban environments (because you can almost always count with a pub near any urban site). My recent projects have dealt with the characterisation of aerosols from urban traffic and heating sources, particularly focusing on the development and use of low cost sensors to empower communities to manage their exposure to air pollution.
Recently Featured Work
Community Observation Networks for Air (CONA): previous projects
CONA studies in Rangiora in 2015-17 and Alexandra in 2018 have proven that the technologies and methodologies used provide valuable data to support mitigation efforts by local authorities.
Assessing post-cyclone air quality across Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay
The vast quantities of silt deposited by flooding have resulted in high levels of silt dust in the air across Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay.
Reducing COVID-19 transmission through increased ventilation
Research Project
Funded by the Ministry of Health, NIWA air quality researchers are carrying out research to understand ventilation behaviour and examine how well spaces used by our most vulnerable populations are, and could be, ventilated.
Scientists bring in schoolchildren to help with air quality research
Media release
22 May 2018
Pupils at a Central Otago primary school are helping NIWA air quality scientists learn more about pollution in their town in a four-month project that will track where smoke comes from and where it goes over winter.
New Zealand’s youngest scientists use interactive tool to learn about air quality
