Special Issue – Effects of land-based activities on the coastal environment
New Zealand’s coastline is increasingly affected by land-based activities, particularly intensified agriculture and nitrate runoff, sewage disposal, coastal subdivision and sediment runoff, and heavy metal and contaminate runoff from urban centres into estuaries. Such issues are the focus of increasing and better environmental management practice. The current review of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement offers further prospect of more responsive environmental management.
This issue of Coasts & Ocean Update outlines research and consultancy work undertaken by NIWA, and follows the successful NIWA workshop on this important national issue in May 2006 (see www.niwascience.co.nz/ncco/workshops/).
