Diurnal Tide (K1)

This chart shows the primary diurnal K1 tide. The colours represent the amplitude of the tide and the lines represent the phase. Maximum tides occur at North Cape and in the Firth of Thames. On the South Island West Coast and around into Foveaux Strait, the K1 tide is almost zero. Notice the conglomeration of phase lines in the southeast part of the chart. These indicate a peculiar circulation pattern around Bounty Island, a submarine mountain whose peak just protudes above sea level. Go to the animation (139 KB) to see how the K1 tide propagates around Bounty Island.
