Wellington hosts international deepsea coral symposium

Deepsea coral scientists from around the world will gather in Wellington later this year to attend the Fourth International Deepsea Coral Symposium. The event, hosted by NIWA, runs from December 1–5 2008. It will be based at Victoria University’s city-centre Pipitea campus.

“This will be a fantastic opportunity to exchange scientific information, establish collaborative partnerships, and help develop understanding of the critical factors for conserving deepsea corals and coral reefs,” says symposium co-convenor Dr Di Tracey.

Symposium themes cover many fundamental research areas and include:

  • systematics and biogeography
  • sampling methods and mapping
  • ecosystems and habitats, especially seamounts
  • geology and palaeo-climate
  • climate change, including ocean acidification.
