NIWA Australia Pty Ltd opens in Brisbane

NIWA Australia Pty Ltd, established in Brisbane, Queensland, commenced trading on 1 February 2001. The official launch took place on 26 April at NIWA Australia’s office premises at 527 Gregory Terrace, Bowen Hills.

NIWA Australia is an environmental research and consulting company providing a scientific basis for the sustainable management and development of atmospheric, marine and freshwater resources. Responsibility is taken for the creation of science-based knowledge, and its practical and productive application to answering management questions.

NIWA Australia is a fully-owned Australian company and a subsidiary of NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) Ltd, a substantial New Zealand-based science company established in 1992, with approximately 600 employees.

Independent and sub-contracted cost-effective research will be undertaken for a diverse range of clients from large federal and international institutions, state, city and rural organisations, and individual industries.

NIWA Australia will build the best teams for each project through collaboration with other research groups and consultants. NIWA Australia brings access to a range of highly skilled professional staff within NIWA New Zealand – including over 200 PhDs and other technical and support staff – with experience gained from the completion of hundreds of research projects, using state-of-the-art instrumentation and software tools, within a multi-disciplinary framework.

NIWA Australia can find solutions to, and provide advice on, key environmental and resource issues such as air quality, water quantity and quality, watershed management, ecosystem health, greenhouse gas emissions, habitat degradation and restoration, fisheries stock assessments, dispersion effects of pollutants, shoreline erosion, sediment transport and natural wastewater treatment. Projects involving environmental risk assessment, design issues, policy development, and social impacts, are a specialty.

NIWA Australia currently employs two senior scientists and plans to build its skills base over the next year.
