A typical component of deep-sea benthic communities are the glass sponges, with silica (glass) spicules for skeleton (imagine Pink Batts). This is probably a species of Euplectella, collected at around 1000 m. It stands up like a vase with the elaborate lattice work covering the top. Credit: Owen Anderson /NIWA
