The Ross Sea includes one of the most productive areas of the Southern Ocean, which is a breeding ground and habitat for the Antarctic Toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni), that Weddell seals feed on year-round. The marine protected area includes areas where fishing is prohibited, a Special Research Zone where limited fishing is allowed for krill and toothfish and a Krill Research Zone which allows for controlled research fishing for krill. https://www.mfat.govt.nz/en/environment/antarctica/ross-sea-region-marine-protected-area/
