Retrospective - June to August Outlook

The climate we predicted and what actually happened.

Predicted rainfall: Rainfall is likely to be near normal over most of the country, but normal or below normal in the southwest of the North Island.

Outcome: Above normal rainfall fell in western Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, parts of Wairarapa, Nelson, Marlborough, coastal Canterbury and inland Otago. Below normal rainfall was recorded in Southland and the Buller District. Normal rainfall fell elsewhere.

Predicted air temperature: Temperatures are likely to be above average over most of the country, but average or above average in the east of the South Island.

Outcome: Above average temperatures were experienced in Northland, Auckland, the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Manuwatu, the top of the South Island, Christchurch, Banks Peninsular and along the Westcoast. Below average temperatures were recorded in parts of south Canterbury and Otago. Average temperatures were recorded elsewhere.
