The climate we predicted and what actually happened

Predicted rainfall: Rainfall totals are likely to be in the normal range in the North Island and the north of the South Island, normal or above normal in the western South Island, and normal or below normal in Canterbury and Otago.

Outcome: For the North Island below normal rainfall fell in the Waikato, Manawatu, and Kapiti regions. Above normal rainfall was observed in Whakatane and normal rainfall fell elsewhere. In the South Island above normal rainfall fell in most places apart from below normal rainfall in the Buller District and normal rainfall over parts of the Westcoast and central Otago.

Predicted air temperature: Temperatures are likely to be near average in the North Island and in the average or above average range in the South Island, over the three months of March to May as a whole.

Outcome: Mostly average temperatures for the North Island. Mostly above average temperatures for the South Island apart from parts of the Buller District, the Westcoast, Fiordland and east of Southland. Below average temperatures where observed on Stewart Island.
