Climate Update is a summary each month of New Zealand's climate, including soil moisture and river flows.

May 2003 – Number 47

April’s climate: Rainfall was very low in western areas. Southeasterlies brought lower temperatures than normal along the east coast.

April’s river flows: Extremely low April flows in the central North Island and Southern Alps.

Soil moisture levels: Very dry soils.

Three month outlook: The next three months may be warmer than normal, and there’s still a risk of lower than normal rainfall in the east.
